My name is Suvi Carlile and I am a recent graduate Troop 62559 in Brookline, Massachusetts, USA, which I was a part of for 10 years. I am so excited to be bringing my Gold Award Project, Sister Troops Global, to audiences like you. I hope that Sister Troops Global will facilitate new friendships that defy the limitations posed upon us by where we live, the languages we speak, and our travel experience. I truly believe that a deeper understanding of the world is achieved when we can connect with people across the globe, and that is just what you are here to do -- thank you for supporting me and my project. I hope it reveals the magic of foreign friends!
As I recently graduated, Girl Scout Ana Ciric will be assuming the role of manager for Sister Troops Global.
There are limitless ideas when it comes to communicating with your Sister Troop. However, if you're still unsure, here's a list of suggestions on where to begin:
Zoom calls with your Sister Troop (make sure it works with time zones)
Each troop can film a documentary and send it to the other. For example, you could show one another what a day at school looks like, how you go to the grocery store, give them a tour of your room, or what you do at Girl Scout meetings. Show them anything!
Pen Pals
Teach one another how to speak your language
Share your favorite movies, books, TV shows, songs...
Make a music video
Make a step-by-step tutorial on how to cook your favorite recipe
Ask each other questions!
Don't be afraid to share any ideas you have with one another. We are here to learn about each other and have fun!
My ultimate goal with Sister Troops Global is to increase interconnectedness with our fellow Girl Scouts around the world. Social media is often painted as a villain to teenagers, something they should avoid because of all its harms; however, I think there are so many powerful aspects to it that should be embraced. For example, it has cut down the time it takes to send a message to a literal insant -- that is absolutely incredible. We are lucky enough to live in a time where we are surrounded by more than just those we are physically with; even someone across the world can be reached with a couple clicks on a screen. Sister Troops Global is the ultimate utilization of such a marvelous creation, allowing us to learn about the ways in which others live, something that was rarely ever available in the past. I wholeheartedly believe that we can build upon each others lessons on life, and that sharing our stories will enrich everyone's life in more ways than one. Thank you for being on this journey with me, I hope you have as much fun participating as I did making it :)
I joined Girl Scouts when I was in third grade (about 8 years old), not knowing what to expect. I quickly found many friends in my community, branching out to girls I wouldn't have met otherwise as we didn't go to the same school. We sold cookies together, through which I learned essential money management and public speaking skills, and got my Bronze Award by finding solutions to contaminated water pipes. On camping trips, I learned how to make fires, first aid kits, and sing songs by the campfire. Some of my best childhood memories were made through Girl Scouts and I am eternally grateful.
In high school, I continued with Girl Scouts while my troop grew increasingly smaller. We started out with around 20 girls back in the third grade, and by the time we were all entering high school 6 years later, we were down to about 7 or 8. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun. The summer before 11th grade, our troop had saved up enough cookie money to pay for a trip to Iceland (save your cookie money!) which was so much fun. We went snorkeling, whale watching, hiking, walked on black sand beaches, rode horses in the mountains, and saw a massive glacier. It was the coolest experience ever.
The Gold Award is my last step on my Girl Scout journey before I graduate. It has been a long process but I am grateful to have the opportunity to help my community with everything that Girl Scouts has taught me.
